Sorkheh Hesar History

Sorkheh Hesar History

Sorkheh Hesar National Park, with origins dating back to the Qajar era, proudly holds the distinction of being one of Iran's oldest hunting grounds. Its historical importance grew significantly after Tehran was declared the Qajar capital in 1774, leading to the establishment of this site as a royal hunting ground, placed under special protection by security forces and enjoying the favor of the monarchy.

Dating back approximately two centuries, Sorkheh Hesar Park and Khojir National Park collectively represent some of the world's oldest protected areas. Originating as “Qarg” during Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar's reign, its expansion under Fath Ali Shah Qajar encompassed the entirety of Jajrood Khojir and the Sorkheh Hesar region, officially declared as “Qarg”. The integration of additional lands and mountains from Jajrud in 1931 further solidified these areas as “Talvu Hazar Dareh”.

Formally acknowledged as a national park in 1980, under the stewardship of Minister Hoshang Ziyai, Sorkheh Hesar stands not just as a historical landmark but also as a crucial refuge for a diverse range of plant and animal species. Amidst the urban challenges of pollution in Tehran, this vast forest area plays a pivotal role in safeguarding life.

Encompassing over 9,000 hectares, the forest park boasts not only extensive woodlands but also a varied landscape featuring hills, mountains, springs, and plains. This diverse environment adds to the allure of Sorkheh Hesar.
